Hey! Recent-ish NYU MPH graduate here
I was SO set on going into healthcare consulting while in school - I was president of the healthcare consulting org on campus and ironically even went to the Yale Healthcare Services Innovation Case Competition haha.
Unfortunately, I didn't end up getting a job in consulting because all my experience was in clinical trials. I ended up in tech designing software for clinical trials to capture RWE data. I really enjoy where I landed and get to work completely remote, great pay, and I get to feel like I have a direct impact since I design the software that's used by patients/trial subjects and make it an enjoyable expereince for them sometimes depending on the therapeutic area (i.e. Sjogrens sypmtoms include dry eyes and blurry vision so we added in accessibility features). I also am in direct contact with clients and actually do consult them on best design practices which is fun and creative for me.
Contrarily, I do have a few friends who did end up in consulting who also enjoy great pay and interesting projects. They do travel quite a bit for work (depending on the firm though some don't at all) and often complain of the hours and loads of excel.
Either route is great but if you're set on consulting my advice is to ABSOLUTELY intern with any consulting company your internship summer so you can have that on your resume which will help tremendously. Consulting firms may say they take people from all different jobs but if you don't have a ton of working experience or relevant (extensive) experience you'll really really help yourself out if you can show you have some sort of consulting on your resume to show you are understand and are competent in consulting tasks. Also, network your butt off!!! Attend any on campus events where consulting firms are making an appearance so you can built rapport.
Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to know based on my experience.
