They run programs with inmates and ensure prisoners are ready to return to society upon their release from prison. They conduct individual counselling, provide treatment assessments for appropriate programs, assess at-risk prisoners and facilitate group programs all designed to enhance and support rehabilitation.
Definitely some unique challenges, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. The people you'll be working with definitely need your expertise, but it's all about building rapport (even more so than in regular practice). If you can master that, you'll be golden.
It's usually composed of case management. There is some case management in terms of looking up resources or writing letters to parole boards or judges, but for the most part, the prison itself has case managers that handle this.
It’s a punitive system masked as rehabilitation. Leadership/warden will side with the enforcers and you will be outcast if you don’t play nice. A plus is you will feel like you’re in a prison daily because you are. They will make it difficult to actually implement any real change and improvements. The expectation is that you complete the necessary paperwork to indicate that inmates demonstrate improvement and have the resources to thrive in their community. Extremely frustrating when you wish to be a conduit for change.
