Hello everyone. I was wondering how the Paralegal job hunt is going for everyone? Are you taking on any contract assignments? Do you have any promising lead (or even hopeful lead)? I have accepted a contract assignment to keep the money moving. I am really enjoying it. This last one though is short notice. I like to at least have 2-3 weeks notice on a contract. Again, I am wondering how everyone else is doing.

Hang in there - it's slow, but there are positions out there. As another poster said, good idea to post your resume on LinkedIn. I started sending out applications in January and didn't hear a thing back (except generic rejection emails) until I couple of weeks ago. Just accepted a good offer. I don't have a specific lead, just encouragement that you'll get there!

The job hunting is rough right now. I believe the attack on law we have been witnessing combined with the termination of federal workers has created an atmosphere of uncertainty and caution by law firms. Some firms that have signed pro bono deals have experienced a loss of work and as a result, they have had to lay off staff (attorney and non-attorney).

I was laid off last month because their "business needs have changed and they no longer have the amount of work to justify my position." They provided me with a very nice severance package but that is not the same as having a job and a steady income flow.

I’ve been bouncing between contracts too, seems like that’s the norm now. Full-time roles ghost or want 10 years’ experience for entry-level pay. I’ll take the paycheck, but yeah, the short notice calls are getting old fast. Feels like we’re all just scrambling to stay afloat.

Yeah that I understand completely, I have found it to be helpful for myself on contract assignments to spend a few hours on the assignment then take a breather to look for something stable. I have so far seen Attorneys want at the least 3 years of experience at entry level. So what I do is I get resources to read, CLE classes (,providing when I can afford it) and friends who work in the legal field to quiz me, . Glad to know you have money moving. It always helps.

Have you posted your resumes on LinkedIn?!? I’m not personally looking but I’m being bombarded by head hunters and recruiters, all because my resume is on there!! I’ve also revamped and amended my resume as I’ve worked different job and picked up different skills

My mother suggested that too.

The market seems hot in NY, FWIW. I know two people who have found good lateral offers in a few months of casual searching, and I am getting even more recruiter calls than usual.

That is fair! I have lived in the city most of my life, so I am somewhat desensitized to it. It’s 100% a high cost of living city, but it’s also one of the higher paying markets in a lot of fields, legal included. I have been able to live pretty comfortably on my salary, plus save some, for about a decade now. It was definitely harder when I was just starting out and I lived with friends for years before I could reasonably afford to live on my own. And I completely agree regarding contract work—I just don’t have insight into that market currently here. Also worth saying that the rental market is way up right now in NYC, which might not make it worth it to come just for work.

Are any other paralegals struggling with billable hour requirements? I have 5 years of experience in corporate transactions, M&A, and real estate work, and have never had billable hour requirements. I'm in a new job now where I do and I'm nowhere near meeting them. I'm getting a lot more admin work than billable work, and it's stressing me out.

Hi everyone. Is it typical for the attorney to take credit for the work a paralegal does? An example: I gave some ideas about deposition questions and some observations I made (I was asked about giving suggestions) regarding a witness and the attorney mentioned that he’s the one that had these great questions/observations. Zero credit or thank you for the work I did.

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.

Paralegals: My firm is looking for a paralegal, and I see the job posting advertising the salary as $65-$75k, with benefits. Is this a good salary for a paralegal (Greater LA area)? I’m not the decision maker, but it’s been a few weeks with very few applicants. I’m curious if there’s something hurting the firm in its search.

I’m currently a bankruptcy paralegal. Not sure I want to stay in bankruptcy forever. I’ve heard it can be really hard to change practice types and break into a new area of law. Anyone have experience or tips/advice on doing so?
