Hello, I have a masters in healthcare administration and have worked in all parts of the healthcare field for the last 8 years. What would be a good starter job for someone who doesn’t have years of leadership experience with an MHA?

It’s crazy that masters degree holders have to apply for jobs that usually call for people with an AA degree.

I get that feeling too, but, maybe it’s because I’m a new manager. RNs tend to make more as managers and they get to pick and choose what they do.

I would advise that you join your local ACHE. Then become active. You get the opportunity to meet with executives, VPs, presidents, C-suite, and others that can give you recommendations and lead you to the position of your dreams.

Wishing you the best.

Reimbursement Supervisor, Front Office Manager/Supervisor, authorizations supervisor, basically any entry level supervisor or leadership role in health care I think would be a great fit for an MHA.

like

Thank you

While I was still working on my MHA, I started out as a data analyst with a small healthcare nonprofit. 5 years later I became a director at a major health insurer. Experience means a lot more than education when you want to get into leadership.

like

What company was the non-profit that you started out at as an analyst?

Client Relationship Manager.

like

Front end supervisor, administrative coordinator in an institution where admin staff report up to the coordinator.

My advice would be to look for roles that make you visible to leaders in positions you hope to aspire to. So if you want to become a service line leader, looking for any quality improvement roles or program coordinator can be a way in. These roles interact with leadership teams more than some of the other ancillary roles. The other path is to go external and into healthcare consulting with a reputable organization. ECG and Huron are large firms with a healthcare focus and then there are the big boys like Accenture, PWC and Deloitte. Those are tougher to break into to be honest.

like

Thank you for the information. I am a lead now for a really small healthcare consulting company. I will take a look at some of the things that you mentioned.

like

Where are you located?

I’m in Houston

That’s awesome!! Have you thought about an AIT program? Administrator In Training for a Skilled Nursing Facility?

Houston is a great place to start. Try Ensign and HSM. Ensign would be an awesome place. They have buildings all over Texas and California. Great benefits. And with you having 8 years experience is a plus!!

I’m a scheduler in a major hospital, see my position in other departments being advertised as remote available. How can I successfully negotiate WFH? I’d like to cut down on my 44-mile one way commute.

Background: I’ve been in my position for 1 yr. I have 20 yrs military experience, bachelors in Business. I took an entry level $15/hour job to get my foot in the door. I’m actively looking for a promotion. But 44 miles plus gas & business casual clothing on $15/hour is killing me.
