Boring answer - it depends.
The schools down in this area (arboretum and south) tend to be pretty good. Things that feed into providence high and Audrey kell HS school are mostly excellent for public schools.
Private could be worth it if (1) money is no object (2) the network it provides is valuable (3) more individual attention/needs for your child warrant it (4) you just want to. It’s anywhere from 15-27k/student/year for most private schools
Go visit some of the school or sign up for tours… talk to your neighbors and colleagues - you’ll get a feel for things pretty quickly.
I have toddler in prek at CMS and going to kindergarten next year. We don't have any concerns and are very happy with CMS so far. I don't think private school would be worth it at your location (if you were in west Charlotte, it'd be different).
All schooling must be complemented with heavy parent involvement. It's a lot of work but If that's the case, you'll be fine.
I will add that I feel a lot of people talk bad about CMS based only on statistics without an understanding of what those stats mean. If you're one of those, you need to understand how those statistics are put together, how the formulas are derived and what assumptions are made. E.g. a good weight of the ratings are based on equity. Charlotte is bad for economic mobility, so students from underprivileged socioeconomic backgrounds perform bad and our districts aren't good at bringing them up to par with more privileged students. It sounds horrible to say but that won't affect me since we're fortunate enough to be able to afford certain things and both parents are involved and educated.
Hopefully the above makes sense. Our friends and neighbors with kids in CMS also seem to be quite happy.
Apologies in advance for having to move to Charlotte.
Public schools here aren’t great relative to other states/countries, so do your research. Quality seems to vary by your location. Magnet schools are best for public option, imo.
Welcome to Charlotte! We are in our neighborhood CMS school and have had a great experience so far. There is a lot of information on the CMS website about magnet options. Look into the transportation zones for your area if you plan to use the bus.
I believe for private schools you may need to do a private psych assessment as part of the application process. Something to put on your radar.
There are a lot of great options out there, do your research on what will be the best fit for your kid but also your lifestyle (e.g., Montessori programs often require much heavier parent involvement at home, distance of school from home, afterschool childcare options, etc)
Where at! I’m just north of the arboretum myself . Mine just started K so happy to talk via DM
