Hello Ladies! What tips would you share with someone breaking into or wanting to break into product management?

Hi there! I recently moved from a content writing to APM role. Here are some of my tips:

1. Start learning product principles. There are plenty of books and podcasts on product. Some of the classics are The Lean Startup, Sprint, Inspired, Cracking the PM Interview, Hooked (more on UX design for B2C products). For podcasts, I’m listening to Lenny’s Podcast on Spotify. He has in-depth discussions on product principles, best practices, and career growth with very experienced PMs. Books are great for going deep into the principles, while podcasts are great for staying up to date on the PM space. Would be great to take a Certified Scrum Master or Certified Scrum Product Owner course, but this is something I’m still looking to do.

2. Apply these principles in your current role. Ideally, your current role would be one that’s situated within the broader product team. For myself, I was a content writer for an app. While learning product principles wasn’t my core responsibility, learning them was still pivotal to being better at my job. I also approached a PM on my team and expressed my interest in jumping into product. And he was happy to teach me more about product analytics etc. In other companies, this may be contentious depending on the culture as they may try to trap you in your current role and stop you from moving out. But if you have trusted coworkers on the PM team, it’s good to ask for help and guidance.

3. Make an internal transfer into a PM role. Despite what I said on company culture, this is still the easiest way to make a move into product management. For myself, the product team was saturated and I had been blocked from moving out of my role by upper management. So I had to look elsewhere eventually. If you see vacancies in the product team, grab the opportunity! You’re likely to already be very familiar with the product and industry so you’d mainly have to brush up on your product and project management skills. When I moved into my current role, I had a very steep learning curve when it came to gaining domain knowledge about the products and industry. So making an internal transfer would be much easier.

4. If you can’t make the internal transfer, make sure that your CV demonstrates that you’ve been somehow involved in product management. This is what I did when I was breaking into product management. While your title may not have anything to do with product, you can still show your experience and skills in product.

5. Managing expectations. As someone breaking into product management, don’t expect yourself to be getting offers at huge companies, except if you apply for rotational PM programmes as a fresh grad or in your early career. Start-ups are much easier to get into and you can see them as a stepping stone.

All the best!

Very detailed! And great points. Thank you.

My dad who lives in Asia just announced that he had a medical issue. I’m starting to enter the age where I’m going to take care of him financially. It’s a $2,000 hospital bill which in the US is nothing compared to what it represents there (which he can’t afford). He’s going to be fine!
