I see the CSM as the one mostly known and shown in job postings. You have to find a vendor that partners with Scrum Alliance and it is a 2 day course and at the end of the 2nd day you have an open book test in which usually everyone passes. You have to do continuing education every 2 years to keep the certification. The cert is on the easier side to obtain and maintain.
I have both CSM and PSM, and I’m continuing more advanced learning through scrum.org
Personally, I’d suggest scrum.org over anyone else if you’re interested in becoming a scrum master. The course isn’t mandatory to take the certification test (but is recommended), and once you have it it’s yours for life - no renewal fees. Each instructor follows the same basic criteria for teaching (from what I’ve heard) which I personally got more value out of, whereas CSM seems to be based on the instructor. My CSM instructor was great, but I’ve heard there are some pretty bad ones too.
The PSM exam is more challenging, but it also helps to validate your knowledge and prepare you a little more for the real environment.
Good luck!
I concur with the previous comments. I find the certifications to be mostly about profit. That said, I have a CSM but would go the PSM route if I had to do it again as completing the series can push you to learn more. The companies want the credentials, but they really want people who really understand Agile—good, bad, and ugly. Read and analyze the Scrum guide, Principles, Values, Manifesto, .. and things Scrum Masters do that are peripheral to Scrum and Agile. Don’t focus on memorization, seek to understand “why”. Tip, surprisingly there are several useful things on YouTube—some not so much.
