First, good luck on the new venture! Yes, there are remote roles, but typically only for special circumstances and doc review roles. I have one as I worked for my regional firm for years in a niche practice area before having my kids and moving across country for my husband’s career. The doc review roles I’ve seen pay anywhere from $20-$40 an hour, which isn’t much, but temp legal companies would have a better feel. They typically aren’t flexible, though; I’ve heard stories about being required to install spotting software on your computer so they can monitor your speed and whether you leave your desk, and in some cases, visual too.
Depending on your practice area, you might check into “fractional GC” roles. These are for growing companies that typically can’t afford a full-time GC, but need enough help that they can’t pay the outside counsel legal bills. Those same temp companies/legal recruiters may have a lead on that, as well. I hope you find something that works; I love the law, but it can be (and often is) all-consuming, a jealous mistress of sorts. If you can finagle a hybrid arrangement that works well, I count it as a win for keeping talent in the industry, sober and not depressed/anxiety-ridden. Also might keep the creative passion itself from becoming a drudgery-filled job, as sometimes happens when you turn a hobby into a career. The only reason I made it through law school as well as I did was that I was a night student with a day job as a CPA. Too busy with both to be anxious about either.😂
thank you for the encouragement and the insight! i’ll look into those suggestions.
I do not think the remote positions are plentiful unfortunately. How many years of experience as a practicing attorney do you have?
mmm yeah that was my fear. I have almost 7 YOE; 4 in biglaw and 2.5+ at my current in-house job at a bank. experience is mostly finance/lending (with some bankruptcy).
Check out Montage Legal Group. It sounds like they might be the right fit for what you’re looking for. You can basically take temp jobs only when you want and they are all remote.
I’ll look into them. thank you so much!
