What you're experiencing is normal, doesn't make it any easier, but as a parent of an 8mos old I'm thankfully on the other side. Separation anxiety hits between 6-7 mos, so you're right on target. I noticed once she started to crawl/pull herself up that's all she wanted to do and gave up wanting to be held except at night. Your phase lasted around a month or so for us, it's exhausting. One thing I did to pass the time was put an AirPod in and listen to a podcast while doing it. Doesn't make the arms hurt less, but mentally you're focused on something else at least. Also, my arms are visibly more toned now so silver linings. Good luck, you'll get through it and next thing you know you'll just be chasing them around everywhere because they can't sit still.
Get a baby carrier and strap them to you. It’s the only way to save your arms. They’ll grow out of it eventually. Have your introduced any new toys to try and distract them? Or maybe lay down with them on the mat? They just don’t want you to walk away.

No, that does nothing. He wants to be carried AND walked. Just sitting with him is no use. We have a carrier—I need to try using it more but sometimes he doesn’t like that either.
When he hits 18 he will tell you to F off, enjoy it while it lasts lol
How about getting a sling
Normal. But watch out for yourself. I actually injured myself when my second one was very young from all the carrying - I ended up hurting my shoulder. (awaiting ‘getting old’ jokes now)

I hear you BCG1. I injured my back picking him up a couple of weeks ago and had to “sleep” in a sitting position for a week...it was miserable...
