You had me at more money and no billables. Those exist?
Spot on Counsel. I interviewed and he offered. Purely insurance defense on behalf of small businesses. This type of legal position is something I did not give thought too before but right now it doesn’t sound so bad given the $$ and location. I have been interviewing at law firms since pre-covid and I never hear anything and this just came my way. They said there would be mentorship and there would be alot of help given all the other lawyers have 30 years experience but cases will be in my name at the end of the day. They are looking to bring in a young attorney to the group. I was told I would only try cases if I wanted too otherwise I can work them up.
I’d say make the switch. Your current hour to salary ratio is some next level of brutality
Made an offer as in offer to interview? Or just straight offer? If just an offer to interview then I’d definitely go through the process to find out more and you can press them on whether there will be any mentorship/supervision and what the hours are really like. Will the work be purely insurance defense or will you get to do general corporate work too? No billables but how much are they really expecting you to work?
Is your goal to switch out of insurance defense altogether? If so are you ok doing it a few more years and switching down the line? The more senior you are the harder to switch, but never impossible.
But knowing nothing else, that significant raise when you live in an expensive market like NYC seems like a move in the right direction to me. Managing your own cases with minimal supervision will be hard, but if they think you’re capable you probably are and it’ll force you to grow as an attorney quickly.
