What do you expect to get out of working at mck? The prestige is more due to client satisfaction and salary. But you literally sell your soul.
If you are keen for strategy consulting in general Id suggest taking a cut in salary (compared to mck) but live a life outside of work.
It's a consulting firm, selling your time for money. What do you expect? It's quite far from the academic environment, but probably one of the best option.
The culture and range of work depend on the office and team, based on the type of engagement you'll be working on.
I mean, think about what you wanna do. In consulting, people tend to not count the hours because they are invested in the work they do. Obviously, the first few years are tough because you're at the bottom of the chain.
What do you wanna do and how to live your life? If you wanna be home at 5pm everyday, consulting is probably not the best option, at least long term.
Key info needed to answer your questions:
What’s your PhD in?
Why do you want to work at McK?
Why do you want to work at McK, or in consulting in general, after a PhD?
What type of work do you want to do?
1. You should be able to leverage those experiences well in your application/interviews. Not my field though, so hard to say more. If I were you, I’d look into highly specialized boutique firms covering your niche.
2. Not sure this is applicable to Mck, but, based on the past experiences and degrees you mentioned, you should aim to come in at a higher grade than entry level. You need a better answer here than that. That’s good for an analyst.
4. With a PhD and targeting McK, I’d expect you to already know them. You better figure them out. Do your research. Talk to people, if needed.
