Rising Star
You likely won’t consult for clients until you make it out of the 2 year mark. Prior to that, you will likely be taking notes, setting up meetings, working on project management, etc. During those initial years, your firm should develop you into being able to actually provide consulting work. Nothing will ruin your seniors day like an analyst making stuff up directly to a client.
No one is ready to do they jobs 100% justice right out of college. And consulting companies and the industry.. both know this. You simply learn on the job. You build slides and run data analysis that your seniors need to present / consult with clients. That's how you learn initially until you are ready to lead the new hires coming straight out of college.
You are one of the lucky ones if you have a choice. Some people don't. Why would you consider going to a smaller firm and aim low to begin with. Larger the firm, greater the competition and even a better chance at learning the craft. Be a sponge.. and be ready to drink from a firehose. Some people aren't made for the pressure and find consulting just attractive. it's for you to answer who you are. Consulting is a lot about networking. I am still learning how to network after working for almost 8+ years.
