Top TX school really just means UT.
1L summers are not the most typical, generally diversity specific programs. Would recommend looking into federal agencies and/or federal courts as well.
Texas A&M (in Fort Worth) is the second-highest ranked law school in Texas, in US News rankings.
We have big summer classes and I would say 1/3 of each summer class (maybe a little less) is 1Ls. We really focus more on 2L recruiting and target only a few select schools (and those that are top 10% at least - I disagree with our grade cutoffs but this is a firmwide thing) for 1L recruiting. Keep interviewing and don’t get discouraged if you don’t find anything at a law firm or if you don’t get the firm you want. 2Ls that we recruit don’t always work for a firm their first summer (most don’t) - clinic work, study abroad, work with a professor, PILF work, nonprofit, working for a judge, etc is common. I am very involved in my firm’s recruiting and am happy to answer any additional questions, just DM me.
Adding on here - we were informed today by our recruiting team that we are done for the cycle.
Edit to add our school does not rank past 25% until the end of 1L
It’s still January, so not all of BL is done hiring for summer (most firms probably aren’t done yet).
I assume this means UT as well, especially since UT doesn’t do rankings aside from announcing the 50% and 25% marks (unless you make Chancellors in your 2L year).
But A&M law shot past Baylor and SMU recently, so that’s actually the second ranked Texas school now.
Super helpful, thank you so much for the insight
Most Big Law TX firms have extended offers. But you are likely in the B holding pattern group. So if someone in the A group declines, that could open up a spot.
Several middle market firms are still interviewing.
1L year is so competitive as very few spots. If you don’t land Big Law this summer, it’s really ok.
Good luck!
Also l commenting to add I am asking because I have 2 more interviews upcoming this week with big firms and just really want to do well and get one of these jobs!!
