Hi all, I am facing being brought on as a full time employee from hourly contractor. The thing is, I won't get overtime and the salary is actually going to end up being lower the way it's set up. But then there will be 401k and health and such. Do you think it's worth it to not have that cash in hand - how much do you really value your benefits?

To better answer that question: what were you paying out of pocket for health insurance as a contractor and is the 401k match even good? What is the salary difference?

likehelpful

If I were to look externally for a job I would add the difference between what I would pay for health insurance, the difference of what the 401k match is, and my employee discounts to my salary and not take less.

like

Just calculate the cash value of 401k, health ins, etc, that you would pay out of pocket as an hourly worker. And then compare the two totals.

like

Hourly contractors make bags of money.

I agree with most of what has been said. I just want to add, do not undervalue stability in a FT job. The coming recession is going to be rough.

like

If it’s really coming as you predict, being an FTE will likely not have any bearing on layoffs.

I agree with the other comments but also consider the type and price of health insurance specifically. Happy to take a look at the benefits to make sure they are a good fit for you.

Follow up post to my last post…My husband was laid off from the company where I also work. I am feeling really isolated / depressed about working and moving forward. It’s like they don’t know what to say or I make them feel awkward so they don’t bother…I’m trying to focus on a few that have been supportive but it’s hard…Any words of advice? 😞

For next year my goal increased by 2.5X, and less of what I bring in counts towards that target. I really enjoy my job but I will essentially be getting a large pay cut. Lost in what to do besides quit??

529 Plan VERSUS Prepaid

Does anyone have recommendations on which plan to go with for each child? I once did the pros and cons on a whiteboard and it seemed like 529 was better.
