Hi all! I just wanted to share my experience with the CPA exam and how I prepped in hope that it helps some of you. I just found out that I passed my last exam yesterday and I’m now in the process of applying for licensure. I took REG and passed with a 75 about two years ago now. I also took the other 3 around the same time and failed all of them. I tried to fit them all into a semester but that wasn’t realistic for me. Fast forward a year later after I got out of PA and went into industry cont.

I tried again. I started with audit because that’s the service line I’m in. I spent about two months prepping and passed with a 78. FAR took me about 3 months and I passed with a 77. BEC took me about a month and I passed with an 81. The method that worked for me was not feeling a ton of pressure to cram in 3 lessons a day. That’s why I gave myself plenty of time to study. I paced myself at about 2 lessons a day. I should mention I used Becker. I only listened to the lecture and did the MCQs. I listened to the lecture at 1.75x to cut down on time. My study time frame also allowed for days off when I wanted to just lazy around or spend time with family and friends. Once I did all of the lectures and MCQs, I did all 3 practice tests as prescribed by Becker. I reviewed the areas I was the weakest in between those tests. I used the Google Docs spreadsheet of other people’s scores as a guideline. If my Becker test scores were around the average for a passing score then I knew I was ready for the test even if I didn’t feel like I was. I hope this helps some of you in prepping for your exams! :)

You are actually giving me some hope as I also moved to industry from PA and find myself having more time to study. I’m preparing now for FAR. Like you, I also tried two years ago taking the exams and only passed one, but the score expired since I couldn’t pass the next exams. Wish me luck. I hope some day to come here and say that I passed the exams just like you! Congrats 🎉 I’m very happy for you.

I’ve been practicing in both big law (many yrs ago) and now in-house for over 10 years. Quite often I struggle because I don’t find work fulfilling. I’ve been in industries that allegedly have greater cause (healthcare) but was eventually disappointed by the corporate bureaucracy and went to a cutting-edge tech company for intellectual stimulation. Still I struggle. Should I try public interest? Not that I don’t need the money but it’s hard to work when I am so detached and find it meaningless
