Don’t wait until the annual review to broach this subject. Most managers come into the meeting with the raise decided.
I agree 100% - if you wait until your performance/comp evaluation it will be too late, Managers are usually given a budget increase based on the prior year compensation expense for their department and they have to divvy it up between their staff, so if you want more somebody else is getting less to offset. I would raise the subject with your manager 4-6 months in advance so it’s on his/her radar.
Don’t think you can negotiate pay hike with manager especially given current environment. You need to present the value you are bringing to the table with solid example with money value to present a good case.
I don’t think you have negotiating power in this market. The ‘great resignation’ is over and people are hanging onto their jobs until a potential recession is over. In line with the above post, overdo the value you bring to the table and get visibility. Network with key management personnel and make your presence felt. And fingers crossed.
I disagree. Put your best self down in your performance review and be sure to list your accomplishments. I’ve always done that and last year was actually surprised with a big raise. Anything can happen and the answer is always no unless you ask. Be positive but not pushy.
At JPM it’s too late to ask for money and it’s not about if you are a good performer, it’s about if they think you will leave, if you are on h1b, no raise even if you get SSS. However, you should still go through the motions of asking so they can’t ever say well you never asked for it.
Been there over 5 years and like someone else said— talks for these raises start months earlier than performance review time.
So say something NOW, bc they have deadlines to submit. It also still has to be approved by the person above your manager and then perhaps even the person above them. And THEN HR. And JPMC moves slow as molasses.
