Here is the the sequence of steps that I used when I thought that I would be laid off earlier this year. It gave me a sense of control because I was doing something.
I did get laid off 2 months ago, but I had been job searching since Jan. And I did find a job recently.
I started by collecting every positive thing said about me.. slack messages, annual evaluation, email. Collect descriptions of the value of my work. How was my product making the world a better place. Basically I threw a lot of text in a google doc.
I wrote recommendations for team members on LinkedIn. Then I pretend to be my manager and write a recommendation about me… to force myself to reframe my experience and skills.
I started a spreadsheet with all the tech companies local to me as well as the companies that I saw were remote hiring. I was just trying to see who was hiring. I was just doing market research.
++++ what the other poster said about networking. Tell everyone (your dentist, former coworkers, family, friends, random person at grocery store, etc) that you are looking for a job. If I was standing in a line, I was talking with people.
I also suggest taking a look at your LinkedIn profile and start thinking about keywords. Your profile is your passive search. It helps people find you via search. Look at other people‘s profiles with your job and see what keyword they’re using. The profile should not be an exact copy of your résumé.
I added LinkedIn connections for a bunch of recuiters from the various companies that I was looking at. I turned on the LinkedIn switch that said I was looking for a job.
All of this work with writing and researching, it put me in the right mindset for working on my resume. I was thinking positive thoughts about myself.
I started my resume from scratch to make sure I was using the right template for scanning software. And my first pass was just a bunch of random words.
I dedicated one hour a day to working on task related to job hunting. Took a little bit to get my résumé in shape and start applying for jobs.
Best of luck.
This is great advice, thank you for sharing this!!
Begin now. Take a deep breath. Get your work samples or any numbers that you need from your work achievements. Update your resume on LinkedIn. There are more steps, but instead of being stuck in fear, you’re going to need to run for cover.
Get moving now. Start putting out feelers. Remember the old advice, hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Start preparing yourself for the job search, enjoy the holidays, and then in January throw yourself into high gear. Don't wait around for the bad news you're expecting, be out in front of it.
Start now, but make a list of all of the possible job titles that you could be searching for- companies are using a lot of different titles for product manager roles. The market is bad, and a recent study showed product management the most impacted amongst other fields. But working in SV should help a lot if the company is somewhat known. Wishing you luck and resilience- because that seems to go a lot further right now and many are doubting themselves rather than understanding that and being more strategic.
I think it was worse a year ago.
Also if you think you're going to be laid off, then you need to apply, the quality of the white collar job market doesn't really change that.
I had forgotten about the job title issue… I would look jobs with titles like business analyst, product analyst, product owner, scrum master (if you have the skillset).
I accepted a position that has the business analyst title. But my job description is a classic product job.
I have seen a friend switch to program management. And another friend accepted a project manager job offer.
When I was looking for a job, I was also looking at consultant roles.
Definitely take a look here, good luck : https://joinfishbowl.com/post_pbsnkzu65p
