Hi everyone. My question is, what is the most common/effective career route to becoming a category manager in industry?

Background:
I’m ~3 years post undergrad in supply chain consulting (b4) and have bounced around b/t projects in procurement (mostly sourcing), planning, and a couple other random projects. I know I don’t have the experience to move into a category role directly from consulting. Should I look for roles in sourcing, buying, general supply chain manager? Thanks

If you have 3 years of sourcing experience in consulting, it shouldn’t be a difficult move. Target “associate manager - sourcing”, “sourcing leader”, “senior sourcing associate” type roles and then you’re just 1 promo away. I was previously in that space and all you really needed was experience running bids, experience negotiating with suppliers, and experience managing supplier relationships, all of which you’ve probably touched on in consulting and would make you a very competitive candidate for 1 level down from manager, if not already manager depending on the company.

My current salary is under market average for my position but based off my coworkers’ negative experiences with asking for raises/promotions, I’m not really sure how to go about starting the conversation with my manager. There’s also a rumor going around that the company is going to scale back on our marketing efforts even though our VP tells us a different story. Either way I need more money and I just want to have that conversation before I begin looking for a new job.
