Hi,
I’ve worked in group homes and with individuals who choose to get supported in their homes. My advice, if you want a more person-centered service, stay in your home and get support services there. Most agencies that run group homes make it difficult for DSPs to provide personal support. I have so much to say on this. It’s an area that I would love to see improvement because it make the lives of the people we support a whole lot better.
The problem with that approach is that many of the clients that I have at the group home are elderly and no longer have family members to live with / advocate for them. And they do not make enough money to be able to afford thier own homes.. many of them were placed with us after their guardians passed. My home specializes in keeping the aging clients from being neglected at a nursing home, that is not going to handle their needs as well.
Our home is where clients go before they go to a nursing home. That way they still have some socialization and independence, and don't have to give it up until there isn't another option.
Not every client is able to stay in thier own home. Hell, it takes two of us to get one client to the restroom every 2 hours.
I've been with my current agency for 7yrs, I started out a $9/hr & now make $13. More than $18/hr is unrealistic, there's just not enough funding/the agency is too money hungry & unwilling to pay its staff a fair salary.
I recommend looking into supported living services.
The company I work for starts our direct staff at 19 to 20 an hour. It has helped some but not a lot.
