My advice is to find a good program that works with your current lifestyle and schedule. It was one thing to flex my entire life around school for my BS, however the Masters was like another job. I truly enjoyed my grad school experience and recall it being incredibly eye-opening and insightful. I’m currently finishing residency (LPC-R in Virginia) and work w victims of trauma. I work in nonprofit sector and recommend it for the vast experience but the pay SUCKS. Always be patient with yourself and celebrate small victories. Burnout and compassion fatigue are so REAL and the world needs our profession more than ever right now. You got this!
Please make sure your program is CACREP accredited. Burnout is real. Go private ASAP.
There are lots of mental health professionals: psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, and professional counselors. Each profession will teach you from slightly different values, ethics, and perspectives. I am a professional counselor, and I love how I was educated about the field. The professional counseling field is gaining greater traction with the Counseling Compact and additional legislation. Great options and satisfaction with a masters in counseling.
