I am thinking about moving into private practice. I am three years out of graduate school ( I went to school for clincial mental health counseling). I am currently living in NYC and my current group practice is paying me much lower (as well as treating me poorly/ burning out) than I think I could be getting if I started my own practice. Any tips on where to begin? Any programs you would suggest regarding the business side of a private practice? Thank you!

I recently made a big filter on what I’ll see on Linkedin and it can be incredibly inspiring seeing work from places and people you admire and not seeing lots of bs that messes with mental health and insecurities. Highly recommend doing that.
After lots of turnover, just got a promotion to be a lead on my acct (another story but feel they expedited ahead of annual reviews to keep me from quitting like everyone). I feel kinda duped, I have the workload of 2 ppl + managing 2 ppl & realizing that clients have been unhappy for months on the parts of the acct I’ve just started taking over. It’s not looking good, should I stay & go down with the ship now that I’m a lead or leave? The job affected my mental health before and now it’s worse

Hey everyone! Hope all of you are well. I recently got selected for a team that is mentoring me to develop financial choices without disturbing my profession leveraging current trends. They are expanding as they are lacking talent to meet their growth expectations. If you are open to opportunities, I can recommend your name and possibly set up a meeting. Let me know.

Any thoughts from others new to the field or advice from more experienced practitioners?

My advice is to find a good program that works with your current lifestyle and schedule. It was one thing to flex my entire life around school for my BS, however the Masters was like another job. I truly enjoyed my grad school experience and recall it being incredibly eye-opening and insightful. I’m currently finishing residency (LPC-R in Virginia) and work w victims of trauma. I work in nonprofit sector and recommend it for the vast experience but the pay SUCKS. Always be patient with yourself and celebrate small victories. Burnout and compassion fatigue are so REAL and the world needs our profession more than ever right now. You got this!
Please make sure your program is CACREP accredited. Burnout is real. Go private ASAP.
There are lots of mental health professionals: psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, and professional counselors. Each profession will teach you from slightly different values, ethics, and perspectives. I am a professional counselor, and I love how I was educated about the field. The professional counseling field is gaining greater traction with the Counseling Compact and additional legislation. Great options and satisfaction with a masters in counseling.
