I work at a small school network and closely with the ops teams at schools. It's a lot this year for them - setting up online rosters for testing (state tests, assessments, etc), creating guidelines for hybrid and in person schooling, planning for updated report cards, among other things. It's very administrative in that you have to write out a lot of things but very impactful work. Feel free to dm me but happy to answer qs in this thread

It doesn't hurt to have a specific target, but it's much more important to have growth-related goals, like students to grow by x% yoy. I have no idea how a new school would define its goals though. I would suggest getting a clear picture and understanding of what your responsibilities are going to be though. Defining those type of exam/assessment goals are not what ops teams should be doing, given your lack of background and experience in education. It should be the academic team setting those goals. I would be super concerned if ops at any school was doing that. Instead you would probably help something like enrollment. Say your school's enrollment is projected 100 kids lower for next SY, so you help look at where the drop is and then coordinate with your family/outreach/development team to plan a marketing plan of some sort to get more kids aware and hopefully applying to your school. That's something I saw the ops team drive, with my help (I work on our data team). Hope that helps!

I'm currently reading about charter school best practices and typical challenges for first year schools but feel like I'm not getting any real life examples. It's not the highest paying job but is a non profit that I think I would enjoy working for. really hopeful I land the offer. TIA

That's really cool! Unfortunately I don't have the knowledge to be helpful, but good luck!

Does anyone have suggestions for how to negotiate a severance? I was laid off with zero warning after being told my job was secure. They blindsided me. They’re also trying to get me to sign the NDA ASAP so we can “leave on good terms”. They made sure to draw my attention to the non disparagement clause. I have 21 days to sign, so not sure what that means from a risk factor situation for them. I asked for additional comp and health insurance. They came back with slightly better package.

I’m 36, earn 100k and I work maybe 30 hours a week, and I’m a shining star. It allows me to enjoy life without stress. I can linger around and see myself (slowly) climbing the ladder. But part of me wants to put in hard work and grow a lot in my career and earn more for a stable financial future, but it means I’ve got to work more and stress more and I’m worried I won’t get time to relax and enjoy my life as before. But also I’m worried I’ll slack off. Anyone going through this? Would I regret?

Moving to NYC for work and looking for places. Deciding whether I should live with random roommates or shell out an extra couple hundred a month on a studio/1BR. With COVID getting worse and winter coming, I see it both ways: I may appreciate having other people to live/interact with but I also appreciate a space completely to myself where I'm completely comfortable considering I may have to spend a lot of time at home (I will be WFH most days). Anyone have a perspective? Has covid changed it?
