Hi! I live in the US and would like to move to Amsterdam in August. I’ve been on the job boards but haven’t applied yet as my lease isn’t up until August and would like to stay until around then. I understand the job search and visa process will take a while. I’ve also been told referrals are suggested but only have connections in the US. Seeking advice on how to time this job search as well as how to strike a balance between sending out apps and trying to first network into a referral.

I recently moved to Paris from Canada and it was a bit complicated:

1- Came to Paris in July to find an apartment for August. It was extremely difficult and time-consuming. French landlords were very reluctant to rent to a foreigner who wasn’t already working in France. Finally found a place, paid for August (without being there), and went back to Canada.
2- Got a visitor visa, in case it took me more than 1.5 months to find a job (I’d already spent 1.5 months in the EU before that). The visitor visa did not allow me to work.
3- Returned to France, searched for and found a job in about 2 months in-country (which I understand is relatively quick!), then had to return to Canada to get a work visa (European Blue Card). I think a fully remote job search would be less successful: it helped to show up in-person for interviews and make a good impression that you’re serious.
4- Work visa took about 2 months, between getting an appointment and getting the actual visa in-hand, then I could actually plan a start date with my company, about 1 month after getting the visa.

In order to get both visas, I needed to travel to visit a French visa centre in-person (there was not one available in my hometown).

For context: I had about 10y consulting experience, spoke fluent French and had a degree from France.

I’m not sure what it’s like in Amsterdam, but I think it’s in some ways similar: visa regime would almost the same, housing is hard to find, maybe less of a problem if you don’t speak fluent Dutch.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I want to move from the U.S. to France which I have researched and I know it isn’t gonna be easy. For the moment I am working on improving my French as the first step along with networking with local French- American Chamber of Commerce. During some time I have spent in France I was able to meet with a recruitment firm but I do agree being there in person is most ideal.

You have 3 major hurdles:

1. Find a company willing to hire you and support a visa - FYI the EU also has a very competitive job market as the US but the salary average is probably 45- 55% lower than what you are making now.

2. Apply for visa once you have a viable job offer in your hand (1-4 months to process depending on your situation) this includes procuring all the apostilled documents, FBI criminal background check, finger prints, medical cert, etc beforehand ready to submit.

3. Find a reasonable place to live in a crowded low vacancy and high cost of living city and surrounding areas.

Fast forward to June 2022, another recruiter reaches out to me re: a PM role. I pass the screening interview, and move on to the virtual on site interview stage. I randomly get a call from the recruiter telling me there is now a TWO YEAR reapply policy in place so I'm not eligible to interview for any PM roles until Dec. 2022. Anyone ever heard of this policy? Seems strange
