I have colleagues who moved from SD to SF. They say SD is more chill, easy going, and less tech-focused. A lot of family-friendly outdoor stuff, parks, etc. I don’t know from personal experience though.
I lived in both cities! Is there a specific area in San Diego that you're interested in?
Ocean Beach (in SD) & Pacific Beach (PB) tend to be more bar/party centric of the beach towns in San Diego. Ocean Beach tends to be older stoners. PB tends to skew younger college age partiers with a dash of the older, never wanna grow up adults. North Park is like a gentrified Mission District with more dude/surfer bros instead of tech bros.
Lots of breweries in certain pockets of San Diego.
Balboa Park is closest thing to Golden Gate Park. There are events that happen at Balboa but not to the extent that Golden Gate Park tends to hold events. Downtown San Diego has Gaslamp district which is full of tourists and military. Downtown San Francisco doesn't have the same kind of vibe.
Little Italy is like the Marina district. I would say consider Tijuana to be like Oakland/visiting East Bay. It can be hours getting across the border similar to getting across the Bay Bridge. 😆
San Diego is more spread out than SF so be prepared for higher Uber fees if you want to avoid drunk driving. Public transit is pretty pathetic in San Diego compared to San Francisco.

Oh forgot to add! Hillcrest is the Castro of San Diego but way more reserved.
San Diego is super chill, obsessed with looking good (for the beach), tanning can be more of a priority depending on where you live. It's more conservative than San Francisco and has an extensive military presence.
How much more conservative is San Diego compared to SF?
SD is very close to the border. I met a lot of people who had strong conservative views on race and immigration, even if they were otherwise liberal.
