Hi! I'm looking for ways other ELA teachers ask students to share/critique/provide feedback on their written work so it includes everyone and not just volunteers.

I usually will choose a short writing that still requires structured analysis ( we do 1-paragraph analytical writing at the end of each lesson) & screenshot several students answers with varying levels of proficiency as anonymous examples on a slideshow. Students work in pairs as we go through the sideshow as a class (though it can be done individually) and score the example based on a simplified version of the rubric I use to grade their writing. They can give 0, 1, or 2 points for each of 5 things:
- Is there a clear claim that restates & answers the question?
- Did they use relevant evidence that support their claim?
- Did they clearly explain the reasoning behind their claim & evidence?
- Did the overall response relate to the question?
- Was the response easily understood?
They get 2 minutes to give their scores & total up the points for each example before we poll the class to see what score was given by the majority of people. I then call on some people to defend the score they gave.

Students immediately recognize their responses when they are used as examples & are full of anticipation for their classmates' feedback. Hearing their classmates explain what they liked or didn't like in the writing brings home the point of what each student needs to work on better than any conference or workshop ever could. Also, they have a certain respect for their peers' perspective because their classmates know what has been taught & what the expectations are; they have to meet the same requirements in writing. So they know their classmates are speaking the truth about if they measured up to what everyone should be doing.

I decided to move on from my job of 7 years, I had no days off, It was getting overwhelmed, I just wanted to spend quality family time, so I applied at another place and I was hired on the spot, so my old employer offered me what I wanted and I decided to stay, so my question is ….. how in a professional way do I tell my new employer that I not coming to work with them. I’m supposed to start by the end of this month.

How many standards are you expected to hit within a year? Do you hit every single one each year or divide between 9&10/11-12?

I’m sure others have considered this, I really feel burned out on my specific subspecialty. For the most part I do interventional pain management. I’m honored to be a physician and to help a handful of people, but any suggestions on changing specialties mid life? I have perhaps 15 to 20 years yet to practice.. I’m thinking about moving up to a high school English position from 8th grade English. Mainly I’m looking for a change. Any thoughts on the differences I’d be facing?

I have high school children of my own, but disciplining high schoolers has always intimidated me for some reason. I have excellent classroom management, but I feel like high schoolers are a little smarter ab getting around rules and less worried about consequences.

I’m told by an hs tchr that the grading load is ab the same.

I got an email last night from a 7th-grade parent because her son said I mentioned the words "male privilege" in class, and she is very concerned about how that is related to ELA (she said "reading"), and she is concerned about this being taught in public schools. To be clear, I didn't do a lesson on this subject but we did discuss rights versus privileges. I've had multiple parents contact the school/get upset with me because of things like his. It's exhausting... Thoughts?
