I’m not sure what it could do for you career wise, but I do know prioritize what YOU want to do, not what the company wants. Having been let go once and realizing companies can get rid of you at any moment, please prioritize what you want for yourself (and future fam)… and maybe that is an adventure in NYC!
I will say I’m sure it will be pretty different moving from a home there to an apartment here, but I love living in the city. It’s a lot of fun, but comes with some downsides as well (which I can elaborate on if you have specific Qs)!
Please could you elaborate on the downsides? UK based also!
I think you need to talk to them about the reason they are asking. Could it lead to an opportunity you otherwise wouldn’t have, are they looking to downsize in London?
Would they buy your house, or facilitate the sale?
If your partner is not a citizen of the US, will they help get them the proper authorizations to work, support a green card for them? Provide job assistance?
If you were in some small town somewhere I’d say yes -consider moving. But London v New York is less clear if there’s an advantage from a career standpoint. Especially if clients/stakeholders are London based.
This warrants a real whys conversation with your boss.
In their mind, what are the pros cons and dealbreakers of your location.
Is there upside to going, do they see downside to you staying, is it neutral?
Are they authentically asking or is it just a line they put out to motivate the masses?
(Context, I ultimately left a firm that had a global head office location that didn’t fit with my personal life plans. We had a candid conversation and bottom line was that I could 100% stay in London, but that if I was to reach the level they wanted me to be, I’d have to go to head office. I wanted a big career!! So I took that insight and moved to a different global company that was head quartered in a place that was a better cultural and geographic fit for me).
I think if your immediate answer isn’t Yes, then the answer is No.
… some things are not as good as they once were. I am also no spring chicken and in my mid 30s. And I do really like the life I have built in London. I just want to know if anyone has been ever faced with this decision? Did you make the move? Will this really impact my career if I did move? Or just any advice. Thank you so much!
Have a concrete conversation. First feel it out over a coffee or lunch. “you’ve brought this up a couple of times now. what’s the impetus.”
Then figure out what would get you super excited about a role in NY. Then you can negotiate your way there.
Upsides:
Potential career growth.
New experiences.
Downside:
They could lay you off pre green card and you’d have to play the “pls hire me and sponsor my visa” game if you wanted to stay.
You’d have to rebuild social circle / life in NYC.
Thank you all so much for taking the time to respond. All very helpful points and much appreciated!!!
