Hi! My husband and I are considering a geographic move from the NE to the SE (Atlanta, specifically). I’ve done preliminary research into the job market and I’m curious what the culture around hours is respective of the lower salaries I’m seeing. For instance, I typically work 1900-2100 hours a year on cravath’s scale + year end bonus. I’m also told the large Atlanta firms expect 1900-2000. So how do they justify the comp reduction? Is it not a “true” 1900? No flak if you don’t hit it?

You’re getting paid less because it’s cheaper to live in Atlanta vs. New York, not because you’re expected to work less. It’s still biglaw.

Absolutely right. I am from GA and went to law school in GA. I moved away from GA, in part because of this. I’m now on the west coast. That said, cost of living and lower hourly rates is the driving force behind lower salaries. In all other respects, it’s still big law with all the typical big law demands.

I briefly worked in Atlanta big law. It’s the same hours but less pay. They market themselves as more relaxed but that’s just not true. I know at least one big firm in Atlanta advertises a lower than market billable hour expectation but expects associates to essentially write off their own time by giving them crap about the amount of time they spend on things.

Very helpful - thanks very much everyone!

Depends on the firm too. Some firms here are cutthroat, but mine (big law) has the listed 1900-2000 hours requirement but has never faulted associates for not meeting that (if they are actually trying to get the work but still fall short). Doesn’t affect compensation either, but yes I think across the board compensation is less since it’s ATL living vs NYC.

Hello RSM coworkers! I am thrilled to be moving to RSM into a Scheduler roll. I just found out yesterday and want to be as prepared as possible in the next steps.

So here are my questions.

How long does the background study take? I'm guessing admin staff have a study that is faster and less complicated than someone in Tax ect.

When training at home what did you need that wasn't supplied by RSM? My home office is well stocked but I want to be as prepared as possible.

Thanks in advance!

Not sure if this has been asked before but what are your billable expectations, what year are you, and what size firm are you at?

I have been lurking on fishbowl for a bit and it seems that my billable expectations at my small firm are too high (1850). I don’t hit them but neither does anyone else including senior associates / partners. Anyways, my boss is using that as an excuse to not give me a raise - so any insight you could provide would be helpful!

Okay. Possibly a stupid question BUT Imma ask anyway.

Can someone just explain how you plan out how much to bill so you can make sure it’s not a mad scramble at the end of year? I’m moving from a firm where I was lacking in any kind of mentorship. No one ever just sat down and explained the most efficient way to track/measure your hours to confirm that you are on track.

Is there just a secret excel spreadsheet that all lawyers have and I just missed the memo???

Can I export a list with all emails I sent for the month? I would like to use it to compare to my billed time to make sure I don’t miss anything. Usually I go through my sent inbox but it has so much extra info so it’s not a quick scan. So if I’m drafting a summary judgment I could search the service and find a similar one. If this doesn’t exist.. I think I found the next million dollar idea lol
