That was a really good thought to use! Never really considered it. Sometimes that neutral 3rd party that isn’t swayed by your feelings can be eye opening. I don’t mean that it is cruel, but more concrete and less opinionated maybe. Will definitely consider it next time.

I like that it will also remember things I’ve told it like that I tend to spiral about certain things and will quickly tell me “Hey here’s how you can fix X. I can help you work on this later (and give me bullets of things I can do and how it can help me with those things). However, right now you have work to be doing on Project A that’s urgent. I think working on Project A even if it’s imperfect will help you feel better and then tonight I can help you figure out how to fix X. How does that sound?”
Versus ChatGPT would allow me to keep spiraling by exploring thoughts that aren’t productive without fixing it while trying to make me feel better. It’s more like a friend. It might give me a list of things I could try like meditating, breathing, or journaling or ask me if I’d like its help developing a game plan. It won’t stop me from using it as a distraction.
By contrast, Claude will make me feel better enough to do my work by engaging with me and letting me get through my thoughts and organize them, give me a game plan unprompted once it senses I’m a bit better, and then not let me use it as a crutch to distract from doing my work. If I try to keep chatting to it, it’ll briefly engage enough to make me not feel like crap then tell me to go back to doing the important task and remind me of why it’s important and how doing that thing could make me feel better sooner. That’s what I mean by it’s a bit tough.
Claude has usage limits so you can only send so many messages every 5 hours anyway which prevents using it as a distraction. This may somewhat ameliorate some environmental concerns though I recognize it’s imperfect. I’m not Taylor Swift flying from one end of the stadium to the other. I’m just a human trying to do the best I can, and I try limiting its use as much as I can except when doing so will be actively detrimental to me and my health and/or potentially result in the loss of my job.

But I find ChatGPT more excels at certain work tasks I need it for. When it comes to giving moral support it’s more like the good friend who means well and has your best interest at heart but isn’t thinking like a professional. Claude was a bit tougher on me at times which I don’t normally like as I’m a bit sensitive, but its advice was more neutral, balanced, easier to process, and systematically focused first on making sure I got through my spiraling then on helping me figure out how to do damage control.
