Hot Takes Needed: CPAs - necessary or over-rated qualification?

How can anybody go to college, decide on accounting, graduate and move into the accounting profession and ask that dumb ass question. Non-CPAs are called bookkeepers

like

I'm assuming you're having a hard time passing?

like

Necessary in profession but no value added

like

Only useful when explaining to friends and relatives about what you do. Everyone knows the word CPA even if they don't know what it actually means.

like

It's a near necessity in the industry, but I doubt anyone's going to claim they learned more from studying than they did from working

like

If you stay in the US: big deal!, internationally: no one cares!

like

You're asking a pretty biased selection of people. I have my CPA, I got it because my father works as an accountant and doesn't have one and we both see how it has hindered him.

like

It's as useless as a degree. Apprentice style working/learning is far more effective for learning. We learn so much more the first year of work than all 4 years of school. The only thing a degree is good for is to get a job.

All the above is true of the CPA license as well. If you want the job, you need the degree and the license.

The value people place on where they went to school and what certifications they have is ridiculously silly. I've worked with people from the big name schools that have 100k+ in student loans with a CPA for years and I've worked with people that just went to a local school for college and still working on the CPA. Can't say I'd prefer one over the other based only on that. I care far more about the quality of their work.

like

Depends on what you're trying to do

like

You can have a great career without it, but more credentials usually means more money. Generally speaking getting your license will get you preferential treatment no matter public or private. Just depends what route you're trying to go.

Anyone here saying it won't change the facts

I honestly don't feel any smarter after getting that license, but for some reason it means a lot to the employers. So maybe overrated somewhat, but it's what it is

Bar license >>> CPA

I think if I move to financial analysis I don't need it do I

Chicks dig certifications

Hello,
Can we get promotion after the mid year review in CitiusTech?
Or the promotion for the mid year already done?
I see for many people the designation has changed but for me it's not. I was under the impression that the promotion happens after the mid year discussion or after the year end discussion.
Can someone please tell the details and when we can expect the new revised letter mentioning the new designation.

Does anyone have thoughts on the differences between working for larger versus smaller Growth Equity firms? Especially as it relates to career progression, comp, work/life…. Thanks

Recently interviewed with another company as a Vendor Mgmt partner. Individual contributor, high visible position with potential. Thoughts?

Most of the time the only response that is needed is “Yes, Seller agrees to satisfy all B-I requirements and to execute an owners affidavit at closing...”
