You won’t get blacklisted for refusing an internship. It’s totally acceptable and expected to explore your options as an intern.
Pursue what you want. No one is going to hold that against you in the future. I did this at a smaller (top 10) firm while still in school. I am 99% certain that they would hire me in an instant if given the opportunity. On the off chance I'm wrong, you'd have the other 3/4 large firms that would happily welcome you. Best of luck!
Go after what you want. Think of you accepted offer as security. Don't get attached to the security. Use it as strength and an advantage to take on more risks.
You got this!
Back out of your current offer once you have a better option at hand.
If you back out, you might burn a bridge, but there are many roles available out there.
Put yourself first
I did something similar where I turned down an industry position for a public offer. I was honest and upfront about the reasons and while the recruiter and manager were understanding, I don’t believe I’d get a FT offer from them again. I do believe you’d burn the bridge if you passed on this offer but if you’re worried working big4 isn’t for you now and you like the other opportunities then do what is best for yourself! I know I made the right decision for me by passing it up but you’ll have to accept you can’t make everyone happy.
You should assume that if you renege on an accepted offer, you will burn that bridge, at least for the near future. I'd say that step 1, you should get the MBB or banking offer first and then decide on renege vs not.
Of course!! It’d be crazy to turn it down if I didn’t have a job ready yet. I think I may burn the bridge bc I did go thru the effort of switching from audit to advisory internally already … but like other people said there’s 3 others lol
If you burn one big 4 there’s still 3. Do what makes you happy. You’re living for yourself, not for a firm
I don’t think you’d get “blacklisted” but I do think they will remember your name if/ when you go through the interview process for a full time position. I personally wouldn’t back out of an intern position you’ve already accepted. That’s an entire intern “spot” that they won’t be able to fill this late in the game. There are only so many spots available, lots of people apply and got turned down, etc.
Just my opinion, I know it’s a tough choice!
Yeah you have nothing to worry about. You’ve got enough time to secure the internship you want as use that as a back up.
