This is a great question. I would say it’s imperative that you take an interest in their life.
Why are you posting this question in a bowl focused on people sharing their salary?

Because being a mentor is crucial to being a leader, being a leader means more money.
Maybe if you focused on it you’d become a Senior Vice President not a simple Vice President.
But in all truthfulness, I agree. Post this in confessions.
One of the most valuable things my manager does is hold weekly one on one meetings with me. We discuss what I’ve been doing, any questions or problems that have arisen, and the conversation generally moves toward what her career has been like/advice for me as I am graduating soon. Giving advice and your own experiences in the industry/your personal work history helps.
Be vulnerable, speaking to previous mistakes/experiences and current frustrations/anxieties - especially with those newer to the workforce. It goes a long way to show that we’re all human, and they’ll begin to more quickly pick up on the best path to success (as opposed to hearing and trying to decipher corporate gobbledygook).
This will be especially effective for remote juniors and those who entered the workforce post-COVID-19.
