At PwC, in Consulting groups, it’s very important. Not necessarily internal “groups” but supporting business development efforts, helping shape / develop thought leadership, and high priority internal efforts (certifications, upskilling, etc) are definitely unspoken requirements to getting promoted in a timely (timely as defined by you!) manner
This may be true in the US, but in the UK consulting, it’s displayed as important, but in reality plays very little into performance reviews and promotions.
Feedback I got was; first make sure you’re at/beyond expectations on core responsibilities and showing ability to handle next level then sign up for extracurriculars. If you are performing well as a Senior then internal work could help make your case for Manager.
Depends on the company, BCG could not care less

Volunteering on committees or for event planning probably won't serve you much value. Volunteering for business development activities and proposal writing on the other hand most definitely will.
It helps significantly at CGI
I almost feel like the visibility is more important than the level of involvement but they go hand in hand. No matter what, you have to be performing well at your actual work for it to matter.
They are significantly important IMO. Also, I believe that if you take up leadership roles in internal activities, they act as a dry run for you to build uo confidence to play the same roles at your clients.
Moreover, these are great to grow your network and understand the business, two main keys for timely / accelerated promotions IMO
It helps.
Definitely helps at FTI
Very firm-dependent. At McK, not at all important for promotion. Can help with rating though
