They speak English in Austria, so not sure why German matters? Also from what I have heard Sydney is a way better city
Americans 😂
If you’re applying directly to one of the consultancies out in Vienna, you’ll likely need to be fluent/conversational in German.
Alternative would be joining a U.S. firm & from the get-go working on setting up a global rotation in Vienna. Don’t believe the language issue is as important if you’re doing an international transfer.
Is your alternative something present at most firms? Or something that I can ask about during their recruitment process?
Ugh Vienna is my favorite city. Studied abroad there and loved it and miss it so much

At Kearney we have a lot of global mobility opps, but nearly every European office has a language requirement, even for internal transfers. For ex they are looking for transfers for the German speaking offices right now (e.g., Austria, Switzerland, Germany), but the caveat is you must be fluent in German oral and written communications. So I feel like your best bet will be to get really good at German, unless you’re thinking more short term - in that case, a bunch of firms have like 6 month rotations or on a project basis where you don’t necessarily have to know the local language
That's really helpful, thank you for all this information
I’ve been chasing a similar goal but with a different target location. Glad to see I’m not the only one with interest in international relocation from the US!
That’s my plan if all else fails this year
I think applying for a US/global company with a presence there would be a better option.
