In short, the Account Manager is responsible for managing the client/account as a whole vs a Project Manager is responsible for the success of the individual project. The AM is an extension of the client and the PM is an extension of the team.
The AM will be the one advocating for the client and the PM advocates for the project team (resources) while keeping the project and client’s best interest in mind.
The AM will help set the bigger picture and over-arching strategy for the client/Account which is where projects come out of. The AM works with the PM to execute the project including scoping, requirements, timelines, estimates, resource planning, reviews & approvals, and actual go-live or in market with whatever that end product is.
There is so much more each role is responsible for but this is generally an explanation that most understand and can also see the difference between the roles. There will always be overlap, but there are also very clear differences.
I’m the one that’s responsible
The AM manages the business of the account. The PM manages the delivery of the work
The PM provides checks and balances. Taking into account both the client’s and the agency’s wants and needs and creating a plan that meets somewhere in the middle without compromising the final product. From a high level, here are some parallels you can draw to compare the two - I’ve found this to be helpful for people!
Thank you all so much! @SPM1 this chart is very helpful. @BBDO1 I like how simple that is @rebecca this is what I’ve been trying to say to people! And @pm1 lol truth
Great descriptions
