The only thing at your job that should be mandatory is that you show up to do your job. Everything mandatory should be paid.
I'm an introvert and I would rather stick pins in my eyes than spend my off time "team building" or whatever. And it definitely should not be mandatory. We all have a life outside of work.
Any time an interviewer says "we're family", you should run. They're telling you that you're somehow obligated to minimize your life so they can take advantage. Bonding events are designed to make you closer so you feel guilty for not covering a loser when they need a personal day, claiming they're ill, when they really just don't want to be an adult. I hear people say "I'm depressed... I'm having a mental crisis", and I think, HOW DO YOU HAVE TIME FOR IT? I don't! I have to work. If I stopped to worry, I might never get out of bed again.
Unfortunately, this is true. I’ve discovered that in this career, you can’t be too nice or you’ll get worked into the ground.
No. Work is where we can team build, after work i go home. Work is not family, it is not friends. It is a mutual understanding that we can make money getting peopleto buy junk from us. .
If it's mandatory they have to pay you! If they don't it's not legally mandatory.
When I think about teambuilding, and anytime I’ve ever had to go to one, there was no direct improvement on how my coworkers and I got along. Sometimes they were fun sometimes they not much fun. if it’s outside of regular working hours, it should be voluntary and it also should be paid.
My company wants us to do " blue sky" , which is talking , deep talking , I am against this as it can be triggering and sounds like therapy.
I talk to who I trust , and that does not include head office
Honestly, that sounds like a far-too-easy way for an ambitious co-worker or manager to get info on you and use it against you later. I had to learn the hard way that colleagues aren't friends and will use you to get ahead if they can, or when you leave the job, within weeks they stop talking to you... unless they need a reference down the line.
I'd rather drag my sack over a pile of glass and salt
If it's hourly and you're getting paid then sure. So long as it doesn't conflict with other responsibilities such as picking up your kid from school, daycare or the like. If you're salaried that's a whole different ball of wax. But I can't imagine you'd be asked to go to after hours team building events every week.
I would not expect my employees to be at a non paying meeting, I have held some meetings at different times of the day, and those who are off I provide them with their salary and a gift card. The least that can be done e.
mandatory and team bonding should not be in the same sentence. You want to have a work event, schedule time during the work day.
Nope! After hours with people I work with is out of the question! When work is done, I am not thinking about anything to do with that place until the next day. No way!
It's unethical, unessecary and asking for trouble, ESPECIALLY legal disputes. It's particularly worse when managers are constantly hanging around with other associates. A great deal of favoritism comes into play and causes friction within the work environment. Mandatory or not, that kind of behavior should never be tolerated within the company. That's like going to work on the set of Melrose Place everyday! Are you kidding?! It's bound to blow up sometime and it's only a matter of time! Avoid!
bonding, lol. is that part mandatory ?!
What kind of double sided query is this
"Bonding" is never mandatory. I'll bond during scheduled work hours, thanks.
After hours. Yeah thats a hard pass. My time should be spent relaxing and doing other things, not centered around a job that might fire at the first sign of slacking off.
Rising Star
If it is above and beyond what’s normally accepted as a salaried employee I wouldn’t be happy about it. If it was hourly pay it is what it is.
Only if it's a strip club....
Mandatory means pay. If I am not getting paid, I will not attend.
Definitely not. Work should stay at work.
