We tried not changing anything, that didn't work, here are some of our changes.
Moved to the city my wife's parents live in for support.
Weekly visits from cleaning lady.
Landscaping, snow removal contracted out.
Cook enough food for three meals every time we cook over the weekend, freeze two separate portions for quick and delicious food during the working week.
Part time nanny to help after school and weekly housekeeper
No nanny. My kids go to school.....
Once they turn 1 they go to one of our private schools
Nanny!
Were similar to EY1 - I pay to have the house cleaned because I don’t like cleaning and my wife is a procrastinator on the topic.
I have a landscaper cut the grass because I always travel. We do the snow ourselves.
There’s always food left overs. Whatever isn’t going to be at the next day gets frozen
We have a full time nanny to help us. My wife has s local job and we have 2 kids. It is still very very challenging. All my friends in similar situations are taking local jobs or one spouse is leaving or scaling back their careers. Being SM would be even more challenging
Thanks guys. Looks like one of us has to scale back our career. We also have help but with kids the travel is becoming tougher. Maybe when the kids grow up a bit things would be better. One can hope...
You just need to work out the balance. My wife works full time. One in preschool and one in elementary. I travel 30-50% and she travels about once a quarter. I think we've only have two or three times that we have had an issue. It's communication and working out what's best.
Outsource everything you can (lawn care, snow removal, dry cleaning pickup, cleaning, grocery delivery, etc) at a minimum. Life got easier for us when my parents moved nearby to help with pickups and bedtime when we both have evening commitments. Be respectful, thankful, and generous with family who helps make it work.
Interested as well...what’s the $$ of a full or part-time nanny?
I pay 17/hour for a reliable nanny two 10 hour days during the week found through an agency on the west coast. It adds up quickly
We pay salary, with W2, on the up and up for ours 40 hours per week. Equates to $16 per hour or $33,280 per year. 4 year old and 2 year old.
M1 - how did you find one you were comfortable with / trust
SM1 there are many companies out there that will vet nannies and handle the w2 tax set up stuff. You can then interview them etc and determine trust level and comfortability.
My wife and I thought about hiring a nanny and we would have had we stayed living in DC because child care is so expensive.
We then moved to be closer to her family in a much lower cost of living area. We looked into it again and I decided I didn’t want someone else teaching my boys how to play baseball. We instead found a private school, fully accrediated with a solid curriculum that accepts children as early as 1 year of age. We had them in school since the age of 1
