Anyone want to run Bain-style cases with me?
McKinsey & Company I am joining the McKinsey & Company Boston office in late July and searching for housing in the meantime. If I could get some insight on the ratio of days in the office vs work from home that would be super helpful!
If I need to come into the office regularly I will try to find a place close by.

If someone from my UG messages me with a nice note (not just “I saw you are at BCG I’d like to learn more”) to connect on LinkedIn I will 100% be willing to take the time to chat for 30 minutes, if the conversation goes well, I’d be willing to look over a resume and give some tips, then depending on resume and 2 or so conversations, then be willing to give a referral

So I will have a different take on this. Yes there are different levels of referrals from “I’m we familiar with this person’s work” to “I don’t know them really.” That said recruiting is typically receptive if you give them a not and “hey this is someone to look at.”
I would never give a recommendation to someone who explicitly asked me for it, but I’ve done some informational chats and, unbeknownst to the person I spoke with, passed their name over to recruiting.
The big thing is do you reach out in good faith to hear about the work and what do we have in common / what is your reach out content. Do you just add me on LinkedIn and ask to chat, do you have a crafted note that shows you looked at my background and want to know about my path to the firm and how the firm is and how that relates to you, etc.
Also one big thing is do not under any circumstances just copy and paste the same message to multiple people and just change their name. You may laugh but I’ve legitimately seen this where multiple people got the exact same message word for word with their first name changed at the top of the message.

Agree with this 100%
When we make a referral, we have to include how well we know the person. In this instance, after just one conversation, if I submitted a referral it’d be under the option that basically says I don’t really know you as I wouldn’t credibly want to say I know about your performance potential. All referrals are not created equal — don’t know that a referral like that would honestly do a whole lot for you.
Do referrals from BAs weigh in as well? If they know you well vs a partner referral who has a weaker affiliation, how would those be weighed?

It’s a hard no if I’ve never spoken to the person before.
If I connected with them and had a coffee chat or something similar I would consider it if I got good vibes

It’s not what you have to offer them, it’s why you would be a good candidate. Why do you want to be part of an MBB? How did your path bring you to this point? What experiences shaped you and taught you lessons/skills that you value? Etc.
