How does compensation at the Partner level vary at a place like Chartis / ZS vs Big4?

A few of my peers have left to be Partners there and I’m wondering if I should throw in the towel as well

I don’t know about Chartis / ZS, but the comp dynamic at big 4 vs boutique firms has been shifting and in some instances the smaller firms are paying significantly more.

Legacy B4 partners don’t want to admit it, but their firms have been stagnating and so has their compensation.

Rain makers in boutiques make the bank and will make more than B4…lower performers will make less. The curve is just wider on both ends of the spectrum.

The other thing to remember is that B4 have mandatory retirement ages and they are pushing back admission. If you have a set end date, then making something between B4 director/SM salary and first year B4 salary can more than make up for the difference. I was shocked when I did the math and found that delaying partnership admission by just 2 years was enough in most cases to make up for the lower yearly comp.

About 50% less

I’ve been a partner at both. Your question is a bit vague since there is a wide range of partner roles and partner comp at both. DM me for specific answers. The short answer is both are comparable. I’d guess the “middle third” of your partner distribution bell curve are going to be about the same. The composition of what drives high comp (“top third”) probably varies between what Big 4 values and what Chartis/ZS value.

Thanks, all. I meant junior Partners - like first 1-5 years. Got some great advice via DMs. Appreciate it

There’s no reason you have to put up with a job you hate. I spent many years working in a toxic environment with a boss who gossiped and lead through fear. He wasn’t really much of a leader but basically a foreman. And he could make my existence miserable. I admit that it wasn’t easy to find another job but the bottom line is: trust your guts. If you feel something is wrong it’s because it probably is. Don’t second guess yourself. Look for options and and fight for your mental health.

Brand new to the bowl. Looking at getting my fiancé his first nicer watch as wedding gift when we get married next year. I’m trying to stick around $7k, but would go to $10k. Is it worth getting him something now or wait until I’m willing to spend more? I know absolutely nothing about watches. Recommendations?

I've heard a couple of things about how the partner pension amount @ PwC is determined, both similar in approach.

Both calculations I have heard of result in an annuity paid until death, at which point a surviving spouse (if any) receives the annuity.

The first calculation I have heard is that you get 80% of your highest earning year as a partner (e.g. If your best year was $1M, you'd get $800k as an annuity).

The second calculation I have heard is that they look at your three highest earning years as a partner, and take the second highest and you get 100% of that. (e.g if your three highest earning years were $1M, $800k, and $1.2M, you'd receive $1M as an annuity).

Is ANY of this true, or just all rumor? Any PwC partners that can chime in and explain the pension plan fact for fact? Perhaps with sample numbers?
