How does WLB compare between biglaw and in-house at a PE firm?

Oof, can't imagine it's much better but probably depends on the size of the PE firm.

The in-house PE counsel I've worked with on deals are working evenings/weekends cranking out diligence or reviewing turns of agreements just like we are. Doesn't look any better from my POV unless you find the PE world or a particular PE firm interesting (i.e., getting more satisfaction by doing the work in-house for your own organization as opposed to being at the beck and call of multiple clients on the private practice side).

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

Had two rounds of interviews for an in house role and really like the company/job. I followed up Friday regarding next steps and was told they are still interviewing and should be wrapping up soon. Advice on how to stay calm? I want the position and need to know if there’s a way to speed up the process.

In house interview- I am going to hopefully the final round of interview to meet the whole legal team. I was asked about my availability, and it will take 5 hours if in one day. Should I split to multiple days? Will it cause any issues? Anyone on both sides can speak from their experience? Thanks!

If you practice collections in-house, what do you earn and do you receive a bonus?

I have practiced for five years and make $121k as an employee of a financial services company. As the only attorney, I oversee all statewide collections efforts, from demand letter to garnishment, with a case volume of nearly 7k new cases per year, of which the majority I end up litigating. I receive only a $1k bonus per year. Is my compensation fair? My last insurance defense gig was $75k.

Considering taking a position with a small-cap in the US trying to build their legal department. The title is standard “counsel” although the work would be with the senior leadership team and reporting to the GC in Europe. How reasonable is it to ask for a bump in title - Senior counsel or Head of Legal, US? If it matters, I am a 6th year and have been told that I will be expected to hire a junior or paralegal as we build up.

Starting a new position in a few weeks and have an opportunity to speak with my future boss before starting. I was thinking about asking if I should read up on anything before starting, but I also don’t want to impose obligations on myself if I don’t have to. Fwiw going from firm to in-house. TIA!

Would love some advice / thoughts. I went straight from law school to a corporate legal department in house for an asset manager. They like “home grown” talent and I “be worked hard and risen relatively quickly (AGC in 9 years). I work hard and get a lot of complicated deals done (structured products and private funds). I can’t shake certain people (in compliance department mainly) thinking I don’t have enough experience to do what I do because I didn’t come from a law firm. Any advice?

I’m in big law and on the cusp of making the jump to in-house. It sounds like the company I just interviewed with is getting ready to make me an offer. It’s definitely going to be a pay cut coming from big law but I do get some nice equity in the company. Is the jump worth it? I’m so burnt out by big law and this seems like an awesome opportunity to help shape a newish company. Any tips on how to figure out if this is the right move for me?
