5 years. The work is interesting but generally meaningless to me. People vary…peers and younger are usually well-adjusted and don’t take this nonsense too seriously. Boomer bosses are generally sociopaths who I wouldn’t piss on if they were on fire.
I spent 3 years in IB, and from my personal career standpoint, it’s just a stepping stone to elsewhere. Hours at top firms/groups are way too bad to make it long term (even through the associate / VP levels) and the money isn’t quite there outside of perhaps Centerview/elite boutiques, merchant banks, or trading side
3 years. Love IB, hate my colleagues. But I guess that’s everyone and part of the charm of IB
Just remember, the only ones who kiss #ss and backstab are the ones who can’t compete with you because you’re smarter than them. You can always go to buy side and fire them. They can’t go to buy side.

8 years. Work has lots of variety by way of situations, even if it’s sector-focused.
As you move up you’re doing a lot less menial/somewhat pointless tasks (aligning logos…) and more BD, which can be way more interesting and you can begin to work on different stuff.
Depending where you are in IB hierarchy (BB/EB/Boutique/B4) you could try moving downstream into MM, where the work is still largely the same at the junior level just you’ll move up quicker and get out of the trenches.
Yes, I totally agree. My goal is to have a better work/life balance.
