An EIN is necessary if you’ll be doing business of any sort, whether grants are in play or not. The only entities I have that don’t have EINs are LLCs formed for the specific purpose of holding beneficial interests in land trusts.

The U.S. has 34.7M small businesses (SBA, 2024), most with an LLC and EIN.
Yet, surveys show only 15–25% secure outside funding.
In other words, the majority (50–70%+) operate solely on personal or family capital — without grants or loans.

I have an LLC business that is just over a year old and also another LLC business I have to renew the license for and am considering altering the name that’s more specific to the services it offers. I’ve applied for the patent on the name of the Trust I want both businesses to be under and am currently reading a book explaining which type of Trust that will work best for my assets. I would appreciate counsel from an experienced investor that understands the details and benefits I’m not yet familiar with. Thanks - Jay

Just getting into business, and haven't even looked at grant options. Is that something you guys would recommend? Starting with food truck. Opening was 2 weeks ago, things are going pretty good, already broke even from start up costs and permits and everything.i do need bigger/better equipment but what i have works for now until I start getting volume fast.

like

Yes we can talk about grant opportunities for your business in the DM

I have started an LLC, and S Corp, and Not For Profit, all of which have required filings with the state corporation commission and the issuing of an EIN. I have only received grants for the not for profit, and have never had business funding (loans) for any of them. Technically, the LLC did not require an EIN because it did not have employess, but getting one early helps in case it ever grows.

Okay would you like my help in securing grant funding?

I have an EIN and LLC but have never been able to get funded for the business i want to buy. I could use info on grants

I haven’t been on the job hunt in years and have two questions for you all this morning.
1. Cover letters - they seem so antiquated to me. Are they necessary? Does it look bad if I don’t apply with one. I believe my resume is quite concise and has a profile summary 2. “Desired pay” - I want to put something like “negotiable depending on total comp package” but will that rule me out? I hate the numbers game

Friends, need some feedback on an idea:

I’m thinking of starting a podcast interviewing leaders at startups about their experience with specific challenges - I know, cliche, get a more original hobby, etc.

Not looking for the narrative arc of How I Built This or Masters of Scale. Instead, looking to uncover specific problems faced by companies that tried something new for the first time. What did they not see coming, how did they adapt and measure, etc.

I have started a side hustle with two friends. It's Climate Tech related. We have been working with it for the past year as a part-time hustle. We want to take it to the next stage.

My two other friends have a background in consultancy and one of them had a mentor who is really high up at a Big4. He would like to join the start up as a Partner. He seems really experienced and could help raising money, although he does not seem to care about climate change.

I started a company just under 1 year ago. We sell a product via ecom channels and have done ~100K in revenue with a 60% gross margin.

The first 6 months I was working a full time job. I quit my job to focus on the business full time, and have since depleted my readily available capital. I’m bootstrapping the business with my own funds. I was recently offered a job in my old industry for 80K per year. I was previously making 62K.

Should I take the job?
