Look at the schools you want, see the average experience for each
Likely 3-4 is the best guess
I did 3 years and was probably one of the youngest in my class. I would say most people return around the 4 year mark. Depending on where you are in the mba prep it might take you a year till starting anyways. While I don’t think 3 years hurt recruiting, I do think it made getting into top mbas harder. I had less on my resume/lower position then I would have been if I waited longer.

Most top schools won’t even look at you until you have 3 years of experience upon matriculation, so waiting an extra year or two to get leadership experience could help
I’m in the same boat, I would look at each school you want to go to average years of experience and try to be around there. Also preparing for mba admissions looks like it’s taking me an entire year so you might want to take into account how long it will take you to take the gmat and get your essays and recommendations in order
I'd give it another year or two if you can. Incoming MBA's tend to average around 5 years of prior experience. Waiting is valuable because you have more experiences as a framework for not just concepts, but also how you work with different kinds of people and dynamics. That being said, plenty of people start their programs with only a couple years and are very successful. Just a matter of exposure.
Thank you all for your helpful responses! I will start looking into MBA programs that I’m interested in for more info.
I’d shoot your shot, applications are way down rn so you have a significantly higher chance of getting into a better school.
Depends on the school and quality of experience.
Also 2-3 years strategy consulting at top firm to fortune 50 executives is different to 2-3 years in a different basic job.
My b.school average 5.5 years. Knew one guy with 3 and his was managing multi billion dollar deals etc. another friend was 15 years with a PhD in bio
Interesting. - folks who applied with 3 years. - is that up to when you set foot on campus? (Meaning you were filling out apps in the fall at the 2.5yr mark)
Also any suggestions on how to stand out if on the younger side and havent formally led client teams yet? 🙂(Work/non-work wise)
EY2 ^^^ that’s how
Oh Congrats! Do schools generally consider additional part time jobs (or the side business in your case) as “extracirriculars” or does that still fall under the work experience bucket?

I had it on work experience since I make money off of it, if you started a club or were on a junior board or something that’d probs be an extracurricular
