MBA by far. The JD imho is a nice to have.
The brands on your resume matter most of all. I don’t know who “Optum” is, but unless they’re a well-known hedge fund, I-bank, or tech firm, even a Top 3 MBA won’t get you an interview.

Couldn’t agree with this less.
I worked at a no name start up before business school, went to a T20 MBA program, and landed at MBB. The path was certainly harder than it would have been had I had HBS and Evercore on my resume...but at that point why even go into consulting?
Recruitment will be easier through the MBA, but as a title the JD is much more useful. An MBA teaches stuff you can 100% learn on the job and the market is full of MBAs. A JD will give you a unique skillset that could make your profile more valuable and open a wider variety of roles.

This hot take is the first I’ve time ever heard that a JD is more valuable in consulting. Honestly curious what you believe the ‘unique skillset’ that you get from a JD is?
Hey. An Optum colleague on here. Good to see. I presume you are looking to get out of Optum once you are done? Neither is needed at Optum.
