This varies significantly based on your passion with cars
I got 35k car when I was making 80K because I really wanted it
Agreed. I wanted a Wrangler and didn’t care. That said, I’m more frugal than most in other areas (e.g., not a huge fan of spending big bucks to eat out)
I bought a 63k Porsche 911 (used car, before taxes and stuff, original sticker ~110k) @ 114k TC and have never regretted it
Same situation, same timing, similar TC when I pulled the trigger. Still get a smile on my face when I drive it. No regrets at all.
Exact same boat but thinking a Mustang GT Premium.. ton of folks telling me to go for M2 instead. Following!
Owned a 2015 GT and have been plagued with little annoying problems and I hate having to take it to a Ford dealership. Just bought a M2 competition and love it
Anyone pay cash for cars in the $20-40k range? I probably wouldn’t buy new, but I could get <2% financing for a used suv, and I’m curious if other folks are doing that same math and opting for payments even if you could buy up front
I could have bought my $20k but I financed and paid off in a couple of months. I already had a good credit score, now I have a great one 🤷🏼♀️ I was advised not to buy it outright, but honestly looking back really could have done either.
Yeah so this is totally personal to your budget. Give us expenses/savings/investment numbers and we’ll see what looks reasonable.
Personally I splurged a little, $110k base but student loan debt, took the reasonable luxury route and got a 2014 Audi A4 with low mileage and 2 years of Audi care gold warranty, just under $20k total.
I’d seriously rethink a $40k car unless you’re obsessed with cars and/or very strong financially. If you wanna spend a little more than I did, like $25-$30k range, there are TONS of very good CPO BMWs you’ll love that are effectively new cars. My buddy is looking at CPO 330i’s, MINT with CPO warranty for only like $25k. Please just don’t buy new whatever you do
This largely depends on COL. i.e. a BMW is very affordable on a 120k salary in Dallas. However you’d be screwed with same salary in NYC
Bruh, just save up for the car you want. Just don’t get in debt because of it.
I just bought a used model s for 75k will annual salary of 170k
I got a 40k car making $52k right out of college. This was mainly because I was living with my parents with almost $0 expenses
When you can pay it off in one year.
Get it a few yrs old from a good dealer. My hubs and I just bought a 2017 X3 for under $25K all in. Interest rates are really competitive right now and you can always pay it off early
Buy a cpo bmw then ? The ride is worth the $$
Get rid of it when CPO ends or you’ll pay a lot for repairs.
I’m in the exact same boat!!!
I bought a BMW 3 Series Xdrive that came off a lease. They cost almost half the price because ~50% residual value.
MSRP $50k and after 3 year lease I bought it CPO for ~$26k with 30,000 miles on it.
BMW includes maintenance and warranty so that takes care of the maintenance cost for a short while.
Drove it till like 90k miles and once out of warranty I sold it. These cars have a base depreciation so after a certain time depreciation rate changes.
With cheap financing I was able to put some money down and get a low monthly payment too.
Not irresponsible in my opinion, if you can get the financing element to a point where it doesn’t burn a hole in your pocket.
I make $125k in total comp in DC with no kids or debt. I can definitely afford it but it might be tricky while also saving up for a house in a few years
Get what you’d like. We spend a lot of time in our cars in DC so you might as well enjoy it. 125k and a house in DC is very tricky, though, unless your willing to put some serious cash into the place after the buy.
Just put a spreadsheet together of what you can afford. I make a ton of irresponsible purchases, but I hold myself accountable and cut elsewhere when I do. I don’t make a ton of $ (approx 120-140) and live in NYC with no car.
I splurged on a sweet (price excessive) airbnb over the 3-day weekend last month. Before I did I put a spreadsheet together documenting my anticipated expenses over the next month. I ran the numbers and decided I can make it work if I cook at home all month and don’t eat out. Just keep yourself honest, and if you budget responsibly you’ll be fine.

5 percent of NW not including house. 2 percent if you are conservative.

Cars are a necessary evil. However, in the grand scheme of things , there’s really not much difference in price between a $25k Honda Accord and a $40k BMW, especially if you find good financing rates. Buying My wife’s Porsche last fall, we discovered a 0.9% financing rate through our bank BofA, so we financed the car. If you like BMWs, get it.
which porsche?
19k car with 100k salary, I live at home though. Sometimes I think about getting an expensive import but I can never justify it.
Pro
I base it on % of net income. Keep car costs around 10% of net income (payment, insurance, gas, registration fees).
When you can pay for it cash or cheap financing and not impact your savings goals!
I make 150k and have 20+ cars. Thanks dad.
