How much does company brand or reputation matter for your first in-house role, similar to how law firm recruiting often places value on joining a V10 firm?

For someone interested in securities work, is there a meaningful long-term advantage to starting at a FAANG company (or similar) versus a mid-cap company? Does the FAANG name tend to open more doors later on, or do employers care more about the substance of the experience and responsibilities you had in the role?

IMO, the most important things in house are: 1. Total comp; 2. Number of levels between your job and the GC; and 3. Type of work. The big brands tend to be deficient in those things. Total comp is reduced because there is less leverage, there are many levels of lawyers, and the work is narrow. Obviously, there are many exceptions to that generalization.

I agree with this. From an employer’s side, they care if you can do the work and have the right experience and skillset. Sometimes it’s easier to gain skills at a smaller organization because there is a broader scope of work involved and less people to specialize/pigeonhole.

like

It’s always better than not having it. But there’s a lot more flexibility and mobility in IHC world vs law firms. You can have a great career doing cool work with great comp at a totally random company. In firms, the best work and pay generally go to the top shops.

My answer to this type of questions is always: it can’t hurt to get a big name on your resume if you can get it. But if you can’t it won’t necessarily set you back either.

like

Do you have an offer at either?

Not really. I started out at "smallish" pubco then went to a F100

like others have been saying, having it certainly helps but not having it doesn't make you any less desirable. For the next ihc job interview, imo it really comes down to what work/skills the prior job entailed and how those can be used for the next job

Securities work just does not come up that often at FANG; great if you can get it but it may be impractical to hold out for it vs. other F100 roles

Hi guys! Had a call with a recruiter and they asked for my email to send me the link to apply. Haven’t heard since the initial call, thinking I might have failed the screening call. After some research I got interested, but haven’t articulated that clearly enough on my call (didn’t expect I was going to be asked questions and thought I would just hear about openings).

Anyone here work in-house at a bank/financial services? Curious about comp numbers given the lack of transparency (compared to law firm salaries)…

What would be a typical salary for a junior in house counsel role (3 yoe) at a publicly traded company in a secondary market (think Austin, Tampa, Charlotte)? I’m having a really hard time finding what a reasonable range would be. Most positions I’m applying to require desired salary in the application, and the truth is I’d accept anything north of 125k but don’t want to undersell myself and take a bigger cut than necessary coming from biglaw.

I’m in big law and on the cusp of making the jump to in-house. It sounds like the company I just interviewed with is getting ready to make me an offer. It’s definitely going to be a pay cut coming from big law but I do get some nice equity in the company. Is the jump worth it? I’m so burnt out by big law and this seems like an awesome opportunity to help shape a newish company. Any tips on how to figure out if this is the right move for me?

When I moved in-house a year ago as a BigLaw mid-level, I took a 45% pay cut, far more than I was comfortable with (although I was fine with a 20-30% cut). I took the job because it was a great role and I was focused on making the jump in house and developing the skills I wanted, which required me moving away from my firm practice area. Now that my year-end review is coming up, how do I ask my company for a significant pay raise (not just a 2-5% inflation-matching raise)?
