Having worked for recognizable companies can matter a lot. The company names will pop on the resume, but there's something behind that. That working experience shouldn't be dismissed abruptly and equated with showing off "tech logos." Not having worked for big names wouldn't necessarily rule someone out. It's conceivable that someone from outside the usual pipeline could advance, depending on their experience, the skills they offer, and how much demand there is for their particular expertise.
I've also seen the opposite, when applying for roles in startups some people assume that your working style will be too different because of the fact that you worked in big tech!
You can absolutely stand out without brand-name companies. A strong narrative around measurable results, cross-functional collaboration, or scrappy growth can outweigh pedigree.
Big names help with visibility, but strong impact and transferable skills matter more. I’ve seen candidates from other industries stand out when they clearly showed results, ownership, and how their experience translates to the role.
