Unlimited PTO is a straight scam. Sounds good until your manager says "its not the right time."
I use every single day I have. In my case, it’s 4 weeks with 7 sick days. Sick days don’t carry over so I make sure I take my days before they reset. I’ll try and split up my vacation to 1 week per quarter.
I try to take around 21 days a year. That includes sick days!
I need to be better about taking the days
In my last gig, I had 15 days of vacation and 10 sick days. We had a few flex days, which didn’t have a cap, honestly felt like a unlimited PTO. Either way I took all of the 15 days of vacation and sick days. I took about a week off every other month until I ran out of both my vacation and sick days. And took 1-2 flex days once a month. The job was so corny and people were unbearable so might as well use all those days off.
I take a week at a time basicallyyyy every other month. In those months in between, I take rogue fridays/mondays.
Did no one ready this? For those without unlimited. I usually try and use all my days given every year and try for 1 week long vacation and use the rest for other smaller things throughout the year.
Around four weeks. Plan everything way ahead of time. Follow the projects so I can leave at times when the work flow is slow.
Unlimited PTO is like Santa, if enough people believe in it then it’s real. If not, the year is going suck.
I try for 5-6 weeks with just PTO days. Broken into 1 or 2 weeks at a time usually once a quarter and then Monday Friday’s only when I can’t get a solid week in. July - September is tougher with production so if I have not taken much time I try and take most of December off ( we close between Xmas and NY so add 1-2 weeks before that.
Last year I was at about 40 days off and probably at that again this year. My first several years I did not take off and realized that did nothing but cause stress. Time off is healthy. Do it sparingly - extend a weekend, take a day in the middle of the week, use a day for doctor appointments, take a day when your kids are sick to hang out. When I am not off. I work. Work my ass off so when I am off, there are zero questions.
As many days as I’m allowed since it’s part of my compensation. Currently 4 weeks per year. Sometimes a week or two at a time. Then random days here and there.
I try to spread it out throughout the year so I get periodic breaks and have things to look forward to. I usually plan 1-2 week long trips either with my husband or friends in different quarters and then take days off for long or extra long weekends esp in months where there are no 3 day weekends like March & August. We have a Christmas/NY shutdown so I try to save a week to tack onto that for a 2 week break at years end.
Pre covid I used to always aim for a winter trip in Feb/March to somewhere warm which hopefully I’ll get back to next year.
I don’t have kids so I try to avoid spring break time and summer for resorts since kids are everywhere.
I use all the entitlements i have and normally space them out for trips once a quarter
about 25 - 30 pto days all together inclusive of vacation, personal, & sick days
Lots of random Fridays or Mondays to extend a long weekend, usually ~4 week long vacations a year, and then some days off surrounding holidays in Nov/Dec
~20
Usually one "just for me" day a month plus 3 one week vacations a year. I had 32 days before endless FTO so I try to meet/exceed that.
