Escape room
I once was in a super painful meeting where the ice breaker was "name one time where you felt like an outsider." People discussed growing up gay, getting raped, etc. Went south fast. I was brand new to the agency, so I never got the full story as to wtf that was about.
My favorite ice-breaker is to ask everyone in the room to pull out their phones and choose one of their personal photos to "show and tell". Usually pets and kids and vacations....but it disarms people and reminds everyone that we're all human, and ultimately on the same team.
When I was an intern, a different senior had to do lunch with us every few weeks. Some actually turned out to be pretty fun, others thoughtful and informative.
Each participant holds a piece of paper behind their back. Someone calls out an animal. Each participant has to tear their paper in the shape of that animal. Time it for like 1-2 minutes. The outcome is hysterical.
I was force-fed a bunch of acid, blindfolded, thrown in a car, and dumped in the middle of nowhere with 20 other guys who'd just gone through the same thing. Ice was broken. Minds were shattered. Would not recommend. Would probably repeat.
They're always a bit awkward no matter what but these have been fun (and informative!) in my experience
What reality show would you be on and why?
Two truths and a lie
What's your secret celebrity crush?
Basically, ones that help humanized folks/clients...
1) Make people shout out random objects. Then get them into pairs or groups of three and ask them to come up with as many uses for one of those objects as possible.
2) Name a thing out loud that you wouldn't want to find in the trunk of your car
Sleep No More is a great team outing.
^ At first I thought you were gonna say you'd have everyone pull out there phones and then smash them with a hammer. I've noticed people do tend to talk more when there isn't a thing in their face.
