Honestly - when asked a question, pause. Really pause for a good few seconds to digest it. Ask for some time to think through it and also ask questions about any areas that are unclear. The interviewer will appreciate it and I think shines a good light on you.
And then I start thinking about how long I’m pausing for haha
I did and still do at times 😂 all we need to do is fail the least relative to the others interviewing haha
Don’t try to get it “right”. They’re interviewing you because you bring something to the table. Good interviewers should not ask right or wrong type of questions. So be confident and treat it as an idea session vs interrogation.
Behavioral are even more chill. Treat it as talking to Oprah Winfrey or something
So if they ask you if some financial metric is better to explain some trend, would it be bad to ask them to explain what the financial metric is? Like if it's a metric I learned in finance class but just completely forgot its significance?
Have you tried being as cool as a cucumber? 🥒
For behaviorals, try to prepare answers to a few of the commonly asked questions/themes ahead of time. A lot of behavioral questions are variants of a few core ideas (conflict resolution, dealing with failure, etc). This will give you flexibility when answering questions and a solid backup when you get tripped up.
Rising Star
I had a technical interview where I fumbled because the questions turned towards developer experience which I didn’t have and wasn’t a requirement for the role. I also wasn’t interested in coding so I wasn’t sure how much to share, lol. I still got a good offer.
Behavioral interviews are my favorite. They are like conversations where you’re sharing how you handled certain situations on a project or with a client. The best responses are to give what you already experienced, especially when dealing with technical interviewers. They will be able to relate immediately because they’ve been there done that.
One of the best things about consulting is that you build confidence in interacting with strangers. Very few people make me nervous to speak to them. Remember that you are interviewing the company the same as they are interviewing you. How they treat you, what questions they ask, their level of engagement, all of those are signals that you’re evaluating. You’re looking for a mutually beneficial relationship not going in to put on an audition.
What? Behavior questions are much harder than technical questions. How the heck am I supposed to answer “What drives you?” without being honest and just say “the paycheck”? Technical questions have a real tangible solution, either you can reverse the linked list and sort the array or you can’t.
