At 40k you probably didn’t have the most reliable car, housing, or lifestyle. As your income increased, so did your expenses. You probably bought the better car, nicer housing, and added some lifestyle changes (for the better of course)
If we all could live like back when we made 40k, we would feel very wealthy.
The weird thing is, I made 40K back in 2017 and it was not WFH. I was living pretty good and even cleared my credit cards out. Now if someone offered me 40K I’d laugh. The dollar has devalued so much that 40K is chicken scratchings.
Yes because you now pay more in taxes and everything else.
Very common feeling these days. $100k just doesn’t stretch the way it used to, especially in cities. It’s a huge milestone, but not the lifestyle change we might’ve imagined growing up.
Assuming not too much debt, the new number is 125K+
