I am a 2nd year associate that lateraled from a small boutique firm to a regional midsize firm. I have been here for 6 months and I am struggling to get work. I am barely scrapping up 100 hours billable per month. I keep networking try to get work out of the two specialists groups that I sit in and the adjacent groups but it’s not working. I’m looking for advice on what to do in this situation. Additionally, my practice group leader just keeps telling me to network to get work.

Start looking before they chop

Maybe work your school network to see if you could potentially bring in a client? You never know; even a second year could potentially pull it off.

Document your efforts to seek work.

What is your billable requirement? Can you make up any of that with development/probono hours?

My billable minimum is 1800. Unfortunately our pro bono requirement is an additional 25 hours and 100 hours of firm commitment. I have already completed and exceeded these additional hours.

I have a partner who routinely ignores emails or responds to them several weeks later. He has to approve every single document sent to the client or the court, which means you have a physically go to his office to ask him to review something. Half of the time you go to meet with him in person, he’s either on a call or otherwise busy. I find that this basically creates more work and makes meeting deadlines extremely difficult. Is this normal?

Any advice on how to deal with a partner/boss who is shifting all responsibility to me with zero guidance, no mentoring, and an unwillingness to discuss the issues? I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.

CA courts are still closed, and I’m worried I won’t be able to exceed (or even meet) my May goal after April.
